Microchip
$50
Every day, pets are lost in Catonsville, Baltimore, Howard County, and Anne Arundel County, and sometimes these pets do not find their way back home. But, we have a good tool in the battle to reunite pets with their owners: a microchip!
A microchip is a small electronic chip placed under the skin of your pet which can be read with a special device. The device reads a number which can be searched for in a secure database. This database has information about how to contact you, the pet owner.
Microchips are a good way to increase the chances of your pet making it back home. In one study, 55.2% of microchipped dogs are returned to their owner from the shelter compared to 21.9% of dogs without a chip. Similarly, microchipped cats are returned 38.5% of the time, compared to only 1.8% of the time without a chip. Most failures with a microchip are due to incorrect or outdated information in the database. (Coincidentally, this was the reason my dog, Mexi, ended up as a stray at BARCS.)
You can find more information about microchips at the American Veterinary Medical Association website.
