The American Animal Hospital Association recommends that dog owners have their pets seen by a veterinarian every six to 12 months. A similar recommendation is true for cat owners and their pets as well. Why so often?

As part of these visits, a vet can help monitor for and detect disease early so your pet can live the longest and healthiest life it can. Good preventative care not only improves your pet’s health, but it can also keep costs low and predictable.

Need more reason to keep your pets healthy? Keeping them healthy is also good for you. Dog owners are 54% more likely to meet recommended levels of physical activity. People without cats have a 40% higher relative risk of dying from a heart attack than those that do own cats. More benefits of pet ownership, and therefore more benefits of keeping them healthy, can be found at the Human Animal Bond Research Institute.

As part of these routine visits, ideally, pet owners will be able to discuss any nutritional or behavioral concerns, ask questions about keeping their pet and family safe, and the vet can test for intestinal parasites like roundworms and hookworms, external parasites likes fleas and ticks, and internal parasites like heartworm, and they can also analyse blood and urine to detect and treat the beginning signs of disease.

The difficult part of keeping to these recommendations is that it can quickly become costly. I hope to offer a solution to this problem in the form of low cost veterinary care at your home.

For an additional cost, I can collect blood and urine samples for chemical analysis. These tests can be quite expensive depending on how complex the analysis is based on what is recommended for your pet based on species, breed, health status, and age. However, the results of these tests are very useful and provide a lot of information into the health of your pet, so I want to eliminate the cost barrier to performing these tests. Therefore, in keeping with my goal of offering low cost veterinary care at your home, I plan to offer these tests for $80 + laboratory costs. The $80 covers my time for collecting the samples, processing them, and interpreting the results.

During this visit, we will also make sure to discuss when or if you should spay or neuter your pet, pain management, exercise and weight management, dental care, husbandry, and any additional topics you want.

Any treatments, drugs, or additional vaccines given will incur additional cost, but otherwise this is an all-inclusive package to help meet the AAHA recommended guidelinees for routine care at a low cost.
