Have you ever been to the zoo and wondered why the animals have such specialized living areas, or why you sometimes see them playing with toys? It‘s not just for your enjoyment. Different species have different natural behaviors that make them feel more comfortable, and when they engage in these behaviors, it‘s a good sign that they feel at ease. You can help your pets by giving them the opportunity to perform their own natural behaviors.
For example, cats like to hunt, climb, scratch, eat alone, groom their fur, and have a clean litter box they can dig in. Rodents like to exercise, bury themselves and hide, and socialize with other animals of their kind. Fish like to have a safe area to rest in. Dogs like to run, chew, dig, chase, and – as my dog Mexi tries to do unsuccessfully – howl.
Although these behaviors can sometimes be annoying to the average pet owner, it’s good to create spaces that encourage and allow them. Consider designating a corner in the yard where your dog can dig, or keeping cat food areas separate if you have multiple felines.
If your pet can engage in normal behaviors but suddenly doesn’t seem to enjoy them like they used to, they may be feeling sick. Let me come visit you and your pet to check on them in the comfort of your own home!
